Weighted blankets: what one study found about sleep
A clinical trial tested weighted blankets in adults with insomnia. See what was measured, the study's limits and how to choose one.

A weighted blanket has a denser filling that applies light, even pressure across the body. Many people look for one to make bedtime more comfortable. But what does the research say?
What the study tested
In 2020, a clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine followed 120 adults with insomnia and a related psychiatric diagnosis. For four weeks, half slept with a weighted chain blanket and half with a light blanket. The weighted blanket group showed a larger reduction in insomnia severity, measured with a standard questionnaire.
What the study does not say
It is one study, in a specific group of people. It does not show that a blanket replaces medical care, or that it works for everyone. If your sleep problems persist, talk to a health professional. Never change medication without medical advice.

How to Choose
Weight: follow the manufacturer's chart, which matches blanket weight to the user's body weight.
Size: it should cover your body, not the whole bed, so it does not slide off.
Fabric: cotton feels cooler; plush fabrics feel warmer.
Care: check for a removable, machine-washable cover.
When to avoid it
It is not suitable for young children or for anyone who cannot remove the blanket on their own. People with breathing or circulation problems should talk to their doctor first.
